Description

Papal States. Leo XIII gold Medal Anno XXIV (1901) UNC Details (Reverse Scratched) NGC, Bartolotti-E901, Rinaldi-95 var. (listed in silver). 44mm. 54.29gm. By F. Bianchi. Struck to commemorate the erection of Innocent III's tomb. Of the highest rarity in gold, this appealing medal commemorates the transfer of Pope Innocent III's remains from the Perugia cathedral to the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterno in December 1891. Remarkably one of the few papal gold medals missing from A. Tkalec's sale of a Very Important Collection of Papal Gold Medals in October 2007, and the first such example we have encountered.
