George VI gold Proof 5 Pounds 1937 PR65 S Cameo NGC, KM861, S-4074, W&R-435. Mintage: 5,500. Quite literally a crowning achievement of George VI's coronation Proof set. Very nearly Ultra Cameo in terms of its bold fields-devices night-and-day contrasts, it can genuinely be said that while the type itself needs little introduction to collectors, it is seldom encountered so pristinely preserved; indeed the certified population reveals an utter paucity of PR66's of the over 800 total graded examples. That the interest in this Proof-only 5 Pounds has seen a marked rise is confirmed by our recent sale of a PR66 Ultra Cameo example, which brought $55,200 in our August Platinum Night auction.
