Glasgow. T&R Arthur Counterstamped 5 Shillings ND (1815-1819) AU53 NGC, KM-CC38 (Rare), Davis-Unl., Manville-35. Displaying T&R. ARTHUR GLASGOW. around 5/ counterstamped (UNC Strong) on a Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1811 Mo-HJ from Mexico (cf. KM110). An extremely rare countermark applied by the lawn and cambric manufacturer Thomas & Robert Arthur, seldom encountered at all and when found, almost universally grill-cancelled. For his part, Manville knew of only one uncancelled example--on an 1804 8 Reales in his own collection--with only one example on this host recorded (heavily cancelled) in a private Scottish collection. Extremely attractive, particularly in the added stamp, and of the greatest interest to the collector of counterstamped Scottish merchant tokens. From the Storck Collection
