Antoninus Pius (AD 138-161). AR denarius (17mm, 3.21 gm, 5h). NGC VF. Rome, AD 143-144. ANTONINVS AVG-PIVS P P IMP II, laureate head of Antoninus Pius right / CONS-E-C-RATIO, Ceres standing facing, veiled head left, right hand raised, torch in left. RIC -. RIC has a small section (p. 40, RIC III 114-116) which includes three unusual denarii and one aureus with this obverse legend and footnotes all of them to be anomalies. This coin, with a reverse type proper for Diva Faustina I, would clearly fit in this group. Also note - the celator ran out of room on the obverse and the second digit is missing, but assumed to exist as part of the truncation.
