Canada St. John's, NF- Union Bank of Newfoundland 5 Pounds 1.8.1883 Pick S122b Ch.# 750-14-08 PMG Choice Fine 15. A surviving example of this rare and seldom seen denomination from the 1883 issue features the portrait of Queen Victoria and the "Fishing Smack" sailing ship. According the the 2016 Canadian Paper Money Registry, five examples were listed, three of which were in institutional collections. Though four examples have been graded by PMG, indicating a slightly higher population, none have been offered in auctions before today. This bank's forty year existence was terminated due to a run on the bank precipitated by the failure of the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland in 1894. Notes from this bank continue to be redeemable by the government of Newfoundland at eighty cents on the dollar, although it's highly unlikely that anyone will seek to redeem this highly collectible note. The grading company mentions missing pieces and staining.
