John V Palaeologus (AD 1341-1391), with Anna of Savoy as Regent. AV hyperpyron (23mm, 2.85 gm, 6h). AU, clipped. Constantinople, AD 1341-1347. ANA-IW-EN XΩ, Anna of Savoy (on left), standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia, saccos and loros, trifoliate scepter in right hand, placing left hand on breast, and John V (on right), standing facing, wearing crown with pendilia and loros, cruciform scepter in right hand, akakia in left / AN/ΔP/ONI/K/OC, Andronicus III (on left), kneeling facing, Christ (on right) standing facing, crowning emperor with right hand; IC/XC (barred) in right field. Sear 2466 (Andronicus III). DO 5.1, 942-3. Ex Andre Constantine Dimitriadis Collection (Heritage Auction 3035, Long Beach, 3 September 2014), lot 32401; Spink & Sons (London, October 1995), lot 138. There is a great deal of disagreement between scholars as far as when, who and why these issues were produced, some listing them under Andronicus III and others under John V, stemming from ongoing debate as to which side is the obverse and which is the reverse. Since the sigla appears on the convex side of this issue, this cataloger is following the format of naming it the obverse and listing the issue under John V. Note - the last time we sold this coin it had an NGC photo-certificate, grading the coin as AU 2/5 - 4/5, clipped. The certificate has since been lost.
