Description

Turks & Caicos Islands Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands 1 Pound 12.11.1918 Pick 3b PMG Very Fine 20. Turks and Caicos is known to Americans and Europeans as a sparsely populated and simply beautiful vacation spot, but that is typically where the discussion ends. However, this small British Overseas Territory, at the tail end of the Bahamas Islands chain, has an interesting history that dates back to 1512. The British finally wrestled complete control of the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos in 1799, and direct or indirect administration has occurred since. Colony-specific banknotes were first prepared for the Turks & Caicos from 1903 until 1928, when Jamaican banknotes replaced local issues. To fully understand the rarity of any Turks & Caicos issue, it is important to note than the population of the colony was between 4,500 and 6,000 people during the lifespan of these banknotes, which is an indicator of how few were actually issued. Between 1903 and 1928, 5 Shillings, 10 Shillings, and 1 Pound denominations were issued, with print totals per date varying, but assuredly in small batches. In 1930, Jamaican banknotes replaced the local issues, and in 1950, British Caribbean Territory banknotes replaced the Jamaican issues. This one pound note is the first Turks & Caicos Islands banknote in any format submitted to PMG for grading. Minor restorations were tastefully applied to ensure that this banknote would be preserved for future generations to enjoy. This is truly one of the greatest rarities of the British commonwealth and most likely missing from all collections. According to our records, this type was only auctioned once before when the Dauer's purchased it in the Christensen sale (ex Amon Carter) in 2009. It is also the Pick plate note in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money. From The Drs. Joanne and Edward Dauer Collection of World Banknotes
