Description

Septimius Severus (193-211) - AV Aureus (Rome AD 202-210, 7.24 g) - SEVERVS PIVS AVG Laureate head right / RESTITVTOR VRBIS Roma enthroned left on shield, holding palladium and sceptre (RIC 288 / Calicó 2529) - some rim irregularity (minor filing or insignificant traces of mounting?), not affecting the appearance of this attractive and popular coin, good VF. The reverse of this aureus ('restorer of the city') refers to Severus' extensive construction and building program in Rome, which included both new buildings and the restoration of existing structures.
