Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Silver Denarius (3.95g). Minted in Rome, 17 BC. AVGVSTVS DIVI F. Bare head of Augustus right. Reverse: M SANQVINIVS III VIR. Youthful laur. hd. of Genius Saeculari Novi r., with features resembling Augustus, four-rayed comet with tail above. Sear 1621; RSC Julius Caesar and Augustus 1. Well centered and well struck with full legends nice and bold. Problem free with pleasing old cabinet tone. Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP
According to Sear, this type is in commemoration of the Ludi Saeculares, the Secular Games celebrated by Augustus in 17 BC to mark the commencement of a 'New Age' inaugurated by the Devine Julius and now brought to fruition by his heir.
