1799 Draped Bust Dollar. PCGS F12
1799. B-22; BB-168. PCGS graded Fine-12. Light even gold and gray toning on both sides. This is a neat die pairing as the obverse always is weak at the center, but this was caused by the bold die crack horizontally bisecting the reverse die, seen on all coins from this die pair. In a special way this major die crack captures some of the challenges of coin production at the time, and clearly shows this result of bad die steel sent to the early Philadelphia Mint in dramatic detail. Pop 2; 17 finer (PCGS # 40059) Estimated Value $1,500 - UP
