Thrace. Philippopolis. Marcus Aurelius, AD 161-180. AE (Bronze, 30.2 mm, 19.92 g.). Q. Tullius Maximus, governor, AD 161-164. ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑΥΡΗ ΑΝΤΩΝΕΙΝOϹ, bare head of Marcus Aurelius with traces of drapery to right. Rev. ΗΓΕ ΤOΥΛ ΜΑΞΙΜOΥ ΑΠOΔ ΥΠΑ ΦΙΛΙΠΠOΠO; bearded river-god (Hebros) reclining, left, holding ears of corn and poppy, resting on vase from which water flows; behind, tree. Varbanov 799; RPC IV.1, 25007 (temporary). An old scratch on the reverse, otherwise, very fine. Rarer type with an interesting image of personification of the river god Hebros.
