Macedon. Akanthos. AR Tetradrachm (23,9 mm. 14,2 g) Circa 424-390 BC. Lion, right, attacking bull kneeling to left, biting into his hindquarter. Magistrate's name ΑΛΕΞΙΣ in exergue. Rev. ΑΚΑ-Ν-ΘΙΟ-Ν around quadripartite square, the quarters raised and granulated. Desneux 144-145; Luynes 1542; BMC 20; Boston MFA 04.661. Obverse struck from a slightly rusty die, otherwise, about extremely fine with a nice old cabinet toned. Of magnificent Classical style.
