Macedon under Roman rule. First Meris. AR Tetradrachm (35mm, 16,85 g.) Amphipolis, ca. 167-149 BC. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver at shoulder; all within tondo of Macedonian shield. Rev. ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ ΠΡΩΤΗΣ, horizontal club, monograms above and below; all within oak wreath tied at left; thunderbolt in outer left field. AMNG III/1, 171. Often described as a celtic imitation but according to us just struck from a worn obverse die and also probably from a series with less beautiful style of the portrait but alsolutely superb reverse with sharply struck oak wreath, perfectly centered, well detailed club and fine style of the inscription with lovely greek caligraphy which actually is a perfect sign for the greek origin instead of the celtic. Good Very Fine.
