LESBOS, Mytilene (conventus of Pergamum), Marcus Aurelius and Commodus AE Medallion (43mm, 38,95g.). Second half of 2nd. Century AD.Magistrate M. Aure. Proteas (strategos). Confronted laureate busts of Marcus Aurelius on left, bearded and Commodus on right beardless,both laureate, draped and cuirassed. AV K MAP AVPH ΛI ANTΩNEINOC A Y in exergue [...Κ Λ ΑVΡ] ΚΟΜΟΔΟϹ. Rev. ƐΠΙ ϹΤΡΑ Μ ΑVΡΗ ΠΡΩΤƐΟV ΜVΤΙΛΗΝΑΙΩΝ in centre, bearded emperor (Marcus Aurelius) on horseback, r., wearing military dress, holding spear; to l., Nike advancing, r., crowning emperor; to r., trophy and two bound captives. A few defects on the edges and some damages on the surfaces, otherwise Good Very Fine. The reverse is known from the medallions of Pergamum and Thyateira also two known examples from Commodus struck in Mytilene. The present example with two magnificent busts of the emperor philosopher Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus is apparently Unique.
