Description

Megaris, Megara. Late 3rd –early 2nd century. AE tetrachalkon, 5.54 g. MEΓA PEΩΝ laureate head of Apollo right / EΠINI KIOY four-stringed kithara. BCD Peloponnesos 33. RRR. Very fine. Magistrates’ names rarely appear on the coinage of Megara, but this issue was especially unusual. On this coin the ethnic was transferred to the obverse so that the Nikios who signed this coin would have enough room to place his name on the reverse. This change in design must not have been appreciated: the authorities seem to have ordered the name to be erased from the die, which then continued to be used to strike more coins.
