Hallstatt B, 1,125 - 800 BC
A sizable bronze sickle blade measuring 22.5 cm in length. Cast in a single piece with heavy rib at rear for strength and knob at base. One sometimes see these being listed as a 'falx' weapon. The word falx was Latin for sickle, originally for the tool of that name. In later periods Falx was used to describe the weapons of Thrace and Dacia which is where the confusion arises. This piece is certainly an agricultural type. Intact and extremely well preserved with an attractive green and brown patina. The blade is still somewhat sharp. For reference, see The British Museum, registration numbers 1868,1228.289-90.
