The Carrie Winslow vessel had three or four masts and was commanded by the Montgomery family. Commander Adelbert Montgomery's daughter, Ruth, born in 1880, came on board in 1895 and documented her life on the ship over the following years. Her whole family lived on the ship: father, mother, grandparents and uncles. Most of them were sea captains. We have found no record of the 1913 accident, and we do not know who was in command of the ship, but it was probably under the control of the same family. The medal was awarded either by outgoing President William Howard Taft 1903-1913 or by President Woodrow Wilson, who entered the White House on 4 March 1913.An interesting and very rare medal. diameter 3.56 cm.
