Description

dating: 1913 provenance: USA, On the obverse, female head (left) with laurel wreath and the inscription 'PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES'. On the reverse, the inscription 'To. G. JOHNSTONE boatswain of the British steamship SYNDIC in recognition of his heroic services in effecting the rescue at sea, on January 5, 1913 of the master, his wife and crew of the American bark CARRIE WINSLOW'. On laurel wreath. On gold bar with the motto 'E PlURIBUS UNUM' and with coat of arms of the United States, on the reverse, horizontal pin. 41 g. The Carrie Winslow vessel had three or four masts and was commanded by the Montgomery family. Commander Adelbert Montgomery's daughter, Ruth, born in 1880, came on board in 1895 and documented her life on the ship over the following years. Her whole family lived on the ship: father, mother, grandparents and uncles. Most of them were sea captains. We have found no record of the 1913 accident, and we do not know who was in command of the ship, but it was probably under the control of the same family. The medal was awarded either by outgoing President William Howard Taft 1903-1913 or by President Woodrow Wilson, who entered the White House on 4 March 1913.An interesting and very rare medal. diameter 3.56 cm.
