Description

PB Byzantine seal of Michael Bourtzes, proedros and doux (AD 11th century, second half)
Obv: Inscription of four lines beginning with a cross: Κ(ύρι)ε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Μιχαὴλ. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription of four lines: προέδρῳ καὶ δουκὶ τῷ Βούρτζῃ. Border of dots.
Translation: Lord, help your servant Michael Bourtzes, proedros and doux.

The Bourtzes family is an aristocratic family of the Byzantine Empire, mainly active between the tenth century and the eleventh century. In 1056, having become a vestarches, Michel Bourtzes was one of the leaders of the army who came to demand promotion from the new Emperor Michael VI.
