Description

Kings of Macedon. Alexander III 'the Great', 336-323 BC. AR, Tetradrachm. 16.35 g. - 30.88 mm. Posthumous issue of Aspendos, Dated CY 11 (Circa 202/1 BC).
Obv.: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Rev.: AΛEΞANΔPOY. Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and sceptre; AΣ (city ethnic) above IA (date) in left field; c/m: anchor (with horizontal lines above and below ending in a small circle) within rectangular incuse.

The anchor countermark refers to the Seleucid dynasty. It was used all over Asia-Minor, but especially regularly in Phaselis, Perge, Aspendos and Side. For this particular countermark see: Heipp-Tamer p. 72.
