Description

★ *An interesting military seal* ★

PB Byzantine seal of Basakios, droungarios of the fourth droungos (AD 7th – 8th centuries)
Obv: Cruciform invocative monogram (type VIII): Κ(ύρι)ε βοήθει; in the quarters: τῷ σῷ δούλῳ. Wreath border.
Rev: Inscription of four lines: Βασακίου δρογγαρ(ίου) δρογγου τέταρτ(ου). Border of dots. Wreath border.
Translation: Lord, help your servant Basakios, droungarios of the fourth droungos.

Basakios was the commander of a droungos, a unit within a larger army division. Normally, just the office is mentioned on seals, but this seal further specifies the command by using the ordinal number "tetartos, the fourth droungos" which is unparalleled on seals.
