Description

Russia 2 Kopecks 1826 KM-AM - Iranian countermark - Alexander I (1801-1825)
11.31g. VF/VF. Unidentifiable Iranian countermark. Cf. Zeno 5087. Extremely rare. https://www.zeno.ru/showgallery.php?cat=9102Iranian countermarks on Alexander I's 2 kopecks coins are a fascinating aspect of numismatics. These countermarks were typically applied during periods of trade between Russia and Persia (modern-day Iran), especially in the 19th century. The 2 kopecks coins of Alexander I, minted between 1801 and 1825, feature these Persian marks, indicating their use in trade within Persian territories. These countermarks may have been produced to legalize the coins in the territory of Northern Iran, which came under Russian control following the Russo-Persian War of 1826-1828. Special marks on the coins confirmed their authenticity and legal status in the new region, increasing their acceptability and circulation in local markets. The countermarks usually consisted of Persian characters or symbols, making each coin unique and often increasing their value among collectors.
