Description

Russia Tin-Alloy Medal 1709 (Novodel late 18th - 19th century) – Battle of Poltava, 27 June 1709 – Peter I (1682–1725)
12.26g. XF/XF. Oxidations. Medalier: S. Yudin (on obverse, С • Ю • in the folds of the mantle at shoulder). Diakov 27.16. Obv.: Bust of Peter I facing right, wearing a laurel wreath and armor covered by a mantle embroidered with eagles. No surrounding legend. Inscription in truncation: С • Ю • (Engraved by S. Yudin). Rev.: Panoramic depiction of the Battle of Poltava; the city of Poltava is visible to the right with PULTAVA. Below – a ribbon with the Latin inscription and the date 1709. Inscription in exergue: INTERNECIONIS • TERMINVS (Doomed to destruction). Tin-lead alloy medals are rarely found in excellent condition, as the metal is prone to oxidation and easily susceptible to mechanical damage. This medal commemorates Russia’s decisive victory over the Swedish army at the Battle of Poltava on June 27, 1709. The victory marked a turning point in the Great Northern War and affirmed Russia’s status as a major European power under Peter the Great.
