Roman Imperatorial (Travelling Military Mint) AR Denarius, April-August 49 BC – Julius Caesar (49-44 BC) - NGC Ch F
Strike 4/5, Surface 3/5. Scratch. An attractive specimen featuring natural toning and fine relief details. Very rare. Obv.: Elephant advancing right, trampling horned serpent; in exergue, “CAESAR”.
Rev.: Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex – emblems of the pontificate.
Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49; RBW 1557.
This issue was necessary to pay Caesar's military forces after crossing the Rubicon River, until the battle of Pharsalus.
