Description

Βyzantine lead seal of the military officer Vespak (?)
(ca 12th cent.)

(Lead, 7.85 gr, 18.90 mm, 12h). Condition: Struck on a tight flan, pierced, otherwise Good/Fine. Uncleaned with a nice natural cream patina.

Obv.: Facial bust of saint martyr Theodore, nimbate, short-bearded, wearing military garments and holding a shield with his left hand, sigla in the field partly present, [o / θ / ε / ο]-δ/ ω/ ρ, = Ὁ (ἅγιος) Θεόδωρος (Saint Theodore), no border visible.

Rev.: Inscription in 4 lines, +κεroh / [θιc,δου / [λω] βεcπ / ακ] = Κύριε, βοήθει σῷ δούλῳ Βεσπὰκ (Lord, help your servant Vespak), no border visible.

The name of the owner of this seal is not certain, as the last letters are not clear.
