A large, rare and impressive lead seal of Niketas Xylinites,
proedros and Logothetes of the Dromos
(ca 12th cent.)
(Lead, 25.27 gr, 34.60 mm, 12h). Condition: Minor scrapes on obverse, otherwise Extremely Fine. Uncleaned with a charming natural cream patina.
Obv.: The Mother of God standing to right, nimbate, wearing chiton and maphorion, her arms open and raised in prayer towards Manus Dei (hand of God), sigla in the field, μρ-θυ = Μήτηρ Θεοῦ (Mother of God), dotted border.
Rev.: Inscription in seven lines bewtween decorative patterns, θκεrohθ, / τωcωδουλω / νικηταπροε / δρω s λογοθε / τητουδρομ, / τωξυλινι / τη = Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ Νικήτᾳ προέδρῳ καὶ λογοθέτῃ τοῦ δρόμου τῷ Ξυλινίτῃ (Theotokos, help your servant Niketas Xylinites, proedros and logothetes tou Dromou), dotted border.
