Byzantine seal in the name of Petros (Peter) with an early depiction of the Mother of God (7th cent.) (Lead, 9.28 gr, 23.70 mm, 12h).
Condition: Very Fine, as in photo. Uncleaned with a nice natural grey patina.
Obv.: The Mother of God standing facial, nimbate, wearing maphorion and long chiton, holding before her chest a medallion with Jesus Christ's head as a child, flanked by two crosses, one in each side of the field, wreath border.
Rev.: Cruciform monogram, resolved with certainty as πετρου = Πέτρου (of Peter, the owner of the seal), wreath border.
An interesting iconographic seal with a pre-iconoclastic rendering of an early type of the Mother of God "Vlachernitissa".
