Description

PB Lead Hellenistic balance weight, c. 4th-2th centuries BC,Thrace Lysimachea, tetarton.
Square in form with rounded corners.
Obv: Lion crouching l., below,  (tetarton).
Rev: Plain.
It is characteristic that the lion is depicted as protome instead of full-figured on Lysimachean weights. But, as unusual, the lion on our specimen, occurs full-figured. This is one of the very rare specimens. Cf. Tekin, Balance Weights In the Aegean World, p. 63, fig. 49 (hemimnaion, 249 g.).
