Description

PB Byzantine lead seal. Seal of Georgios Argyropoulos, proedros (second half of the 11th century).
Obv: Bust of St Georgios, vertical inscriptions: |ΓΡΓ : ῾Ο ἅ(γιος) Γεώργ(ιος). Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription in five lines: Κ/Θ/|ΓΡΓΙ|ΠΡΟΔΡ|ΤΑΡΓΥΡ/|ΠΛ : Κ(ύ)ρ(ιε) β(οή)θ(ει) Γεωργίῳ προέδρῳ τῷ ᾿Αργυρ(ο)πώλῳ. Border of dots.
The owner of this well preserved seal is a member of great Argyroi family. Other known specimens, Hermitage M- 5610; Schlumberger, Sigillographie p. 573, no. 3; Cheynet - Vannier, Argyroi p. 82; Seibt, Sammlung Köhler-Osbahr no. 17.
