TROAS, Assos. (Circa 500-450 BC). AR, Drachm.
Obv: Griffin seated left; tongue out.
Rev: Lion head right, prominent teeth and tongue out; within square incuse.

Condition: Good EF.
Weight:3.67 g.
Diameter: 13 mm.
The most common examples of Assos are the griffin and the lion head group. In this group, instances where the lion's head and the griffin look in opposite directions are extremely rare. The coins of Assos with these types are mostly obol. This example is extremely rare in that the types look in different directions. It is also one of the lesser known drachmi examples of Assos. This coin is the best known specimen ever known. lightly loved toned, the lines are clearly processed.
