★ A very rare and historically important seal. ★

PB Byzantine lead seal. Seal of strategos and megas primikerios of the ethnikoi (late 11th century,) PB
Obv: Inscription in five lines. Border of dots.
Rev: Inscription in five lines. Border of dots.
In the late 11th century, the dignity of megas primikerios (Grand Primicerius) was established, which ranked very high in court hierarchy well into the Palaiologan period. It functioned as a chief of the foreign soldiers forming the emperor’s bodyguard.
A very rare and historically important seal. Cf. Zacos II, no. 732 (for the title).
