Description

Great Britain, Victoria, 1837-1901. AV ‘Shield’ Sovereign, 1853, London mint, W.W. raised, AGW: 0.2355oz (KM736.1; S-3852C; Fr. 387e).

An example with surviving luster and especially sharp reverse strike.

Graded AU58 NGC

All shield sovereigns from 1838 to 1852 have raised initials and all first type shields from 1856 to 1863 have incuse initials. The dates of 1853, 1854 and 1855 occur in both varieties. Michael Marsh’s publication does not separate the two varieties although in Spink’s publication it is recognised as a separate variety.
