Sicily. Gela. Tetradrachm. Circa 450-440 BC (Silver, 25.29 mm, 16.97 g). Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding kentron and reins; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses; in exergue, palmette with long tendrils. Rev. [CEΛΑΣ], Forepart of man-headed bull (the river-god Gelas) right. Jenkins, Group IV, 346 (O66/R136). SNG ANS 63. SNG Lockett 771 (same obverse die). BMC 36 (same). HGC 2, 343. Attractive old cabinet toning. Of refined style, struck from dies of high artistic quality. Good Extremely Fine and possibly among the finest known specimens. Rare.
