In 1808 Gioacchino Murat was appointed king of Naples by Napoleon and already known as "Gioacchino Napoleone", thanks to his good looks, sanguine character and physical courage he was appreciated by the Neapolitans. During his short reign, Murat founded and initiated major public works.This plaquette and one very similar to this, representing Carolina Bonaparte, wife of Gioacchino Murat were commissioned in honor of their nomination as regal couple governing Naples and Sicilie.
