Description

Serbia. Stefan Nemanja (1166-1199). BI Half Follaro, Kotor (Cattaro) mint, after 1189. Obv. Large cross. Rev. Nimbate bust of Saint Trifon facing. Dobrinic 1.2.3.1-26. Jov 25 4.2. BI. 0.87 g. 17.00 mm. RR. Very rare. Deep scratches. VF. The prominent cross positioned at the center of the obverse bears a striking resemblance to the emblem of the Knights Hospitaller, known as the Maltese cross, frequently found on coins from the era of the Crusades. Should it indeed signify a connection to these historical campaigns, it is plausible that the coin was minted during either the Third Crusade (1189-1192) or the Fourth Crusade (1202-1204), possibly under the rule of Stefan Nemanja (1166-1196) or his son Stefan Nemanjic (1196-1217), later known as King Stefan I (1217-1228).
