Sicily. Syracuse. Gelon (485-478 BC). AR Tetradrachm. Struck circa 478-475 BC. Obv. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses with wreath. Rev. Diademed head of Arethusa right, wearing single-pendant earring and necklace; ΣVRAKOΣION and four dolphins around. HGC 2 1306; Boehringer 149; SNG ANS 42 (same dies). AR. 17.18 g. 25.50 mm. Lightly toned with warm hues. Area of pitting on obverse. Good VF.
