Description

Greek Italy. Central Italy, uncertain mint. AE Cast Semis, 3rd century BC. Head of bull three-quarter right. / Prow right, with acrostolium; before, S. Vecchi ICC 276; HN Italy 359; Haeb. p. 157-158 1-24 and pl. 66, 5-9. AE. 130.50 g. 56.00 mm. RR. Very rare and not recognisable series. Blackish green patina. VF. For the shape of the prow, compare R. Pagenstecher, Die calenische Reliefkeramik (Berlin, 1909) no. 128; there are no real arguments for regarding the issue as Roman (contra Thomsen, ERC III, p. 149-50). (HN Italy p. 52).
