Toulmin, Hazard & Co. was a commission firm involved in the cotton trade between the North and South during the early to mid-1800s and into the Civil War. Following the War of 1812, a huge increase in the production of cotton resulted in an economic boom, and by midcentury, cotton was they key cash crop of the southern economy and the most important American commodity.
