Continental Battalion, 1777 Promissory Note Issued to Captain Joseph Allen Wright
Connecticut. February 7th, 1777. Promissory note issued to Captain Joseph Allen Wright for the sum of 360 Pounds, for "inlisting his own Company, in the Continental Battalion to commanded by Charles Webb Esq," Black text with black handwriting, Signed by Committee Pay-Table members Thomas Seymour and Ebenezer Williams. Promissory Notes like this were issued by the State of Connecticut to help finance the Revolutionary War. Military finances in the state of Connecticut were managed by the Pay-Table which was also known as the Committee of Four during the Revolutionary War. Thomas Seymour (1735-1829) became lieutenant colonel of the 1st Connecticut state regiment of light horse in June 1776 and the following month led three regiments of horsemen to New York as a temporary reinforcement to the Continental army. Colonel Charles Webb (1724-1794) of Stamford commanded the 7th Connecticut Regiment. He resigned his commission in March of 1778. VF condition.
