Pennsylvania Colonial Currency Quartet, April 3rd, 1772
Pennsylvania, April 3rd, 1772. Lot of 4 Issued banknotes: 1 Shilling, P-S2536, S/N 19129; 18 Pence, P-S2537, S/N 17074; 2 Shillings, P-S2538, S/N 16538; and 2 Shillings and 6 Pence, P-S2539. All have black text with the arms of the Penn family. Good to VG repaired to Fine condition. Printed by Hall and Sellers. Various signatures includes Clement Biddle and Adam Hubley. Clement Biddle (1740 - 1814) was a Philadelphia merchant and American Revolutionary War soldier, with the rank of Colonel. During the American Revolutionary War, Biddle fought in the Battle of Princeton, the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Germantown and the Battle of Monmouth. He was the Commissary General at Valley Forge under George Washington, and his headquarters was at Moore Hall. In 1781, Biddle was made quarter-master general of the Pennsylvanian troops. After the Revolutionary War, he was the first U.S. Marshal (1789-1793) for Pennsylvania. (4)
