RARE BYZANTINE GOLD PENDANT WITH CARNELIAN INTAGLIO DEPICTING THEODOSIUS
Ca. AD 370 - 450 A Byzantine gold pendant in the shape of a stylised bell, that secures a large carnelian intaglio. The intaglio depicts the Byzantine emperor, Theodosius. The figure is front facing, dressed in a long tunic and a large crown; the facial features are typical of the early Byzantine period. The bust is surrounded by an inscription with a cross at the centre. On the top of the pendant is a double round hoop. For similar see: MET Museum Accession Number: 04.35.18.
