WESTERN ASIATIC BRONZE HELMET AND TORC

Mesopotamia, Assyria, Ca. 800-700 BC
A non-deformed bronze helmet with two tongue-shaped cheek guards and pectoral. The helmet is formed of a hammered sheet that is conical in shape, tapering sharply to a tall point. The bronze torc is also conical in shape, with long plates to sit on owners collar. It is decorated with three cylindrical circles in shape of mounds. For a helmet of a similar type, see a chariot relief from the North-Palace of Ashurbanipal (A019909) in the Louvre, Paris, France with Assyrian warriors; Hermann Historica, Works of Art, Antiquities, Asian and Russian Art, 2022, lot 848.

Provenance: Property of a London private collector; formerly in a European collection; acquired from Peter Ing till collection in early 2000s (Vienna). Formerly in an old Austrian collection. This item has been checked against the Art Loss Register database.
