Description

Ca. 300 BC.
A terracotta dish crafted with precision and finesse. The plate's low foot elevates it above the ground, while the rounded flange lends a graceful curvature to its otherwise flat shape, and its shallow basin invites exploration. Perhaps it was once used to serve food at a lavish feast, or as a decorative piece to adorn the walls of a noble's villa. Ceramic production during the Hellenistic period was marked by innovation and refinement. Greek artisans experimented with new techniques and styles, resulting in a wide variety of beautiful and functional vessels. The use of molds and wheel-throwing allowed for greater precision in shaping and designing pottery, while advances in kiln technology enabled more consistent firing and glazing. As a result, Hellenistic pottery stands as a testament to the creativity and artistry of ancient Greek civilization.
Size: L:60mm / W:200mm ; 690g
Provenance: Private London collection, pre-2000s.
