Description

Ca. 8th-7th century BC.
A pottery vessel in the form of a squat lekythos. This artifact features a broad, bell-shaped lower body, and a tubular neck that terminates in a flared mouth. An arched single handle protrudes from the shoulder, enabling the user to hold and pour the contents with ease. The lekythos is embellished with dark-painted bands that circumnavigate the orange terracotta surface, creating a striking contrast. The decorative bands are present on the bottom edge, shoulder, and lip of the vessel, accentuating its visual appeal. Lekythoi of this kind were used for a wide range of purposes, including the storage and transportation of liquids such as oils, perfumes, and wine. Due to their aesthetic appeal and practicality, lekythoi were commonly used in funerary practices, as they were often placed alongside the deceased in tombs as offerings to the gods.
Size: L:205mm / W:130mm ; 575g
Provenance: Private London collection, B.A.; formerly in pre-2000 European collection.
