ROMAN SILVER SKYPHOS
Ca. 100 AD
A silver skyphos, meticulously crafted, boasts an exquisite assemblage of features. Resting atop a circular concave low foot, this resplendent vessel exhibits a flaring body, accentuated by the presence of two elongated, opposing handles. Each handle, meticulously fashioned with a flat section profile, culminates in captivating lower finials resembling palmettes, whilst upper finilals seamlessly merging into the rim. Functionally, this skyphos served as a vessel for libations, particularly wine, within the context of Greco-Roman symposia and convivial gatherings. With its ergonomic design, the skyphos ensured ease of handling and controlled pouring, while the palmette finials lent an aesthetic grace that mirrored the elevated cultural sensibilities of the period.
