Description

SELJUK BRASS DISH

Ca. 1100-1200 AD
A brass dish exhibits a distinctive form that reflects the artistic sensibilities of the Seljuk period. This round dish presents a broad and flat base, accompanied by low straight walls that gracefully ascend to a flattened rim. The rim itself bears intricate incised decorations, featuring rectangular panels of scrollwork interspersed with small roundels adorned with delicate floral motifs. The bottom of the basin is a focal point of artistic craftsmanship, with a composition that centers around a six-petalled rosette encircled by a scrollwork band mirroring the pattern found on the rim. This central design is further enhanced by a deep groove and a decorative register, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail applied by the Seljuk metalworkers. Seljuk metalware, including objects like this dish, exemplify the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic expression of the Seljuk period. The Seljuks, a dynasty that reigned from the 11th to the 13th century, fostered a vibrant cultural atmosphere where metalworking thrived. Metal artisans employed their skills to create a wide range of functional and decorative objects, showcasing their mastery of techniques such as casting, engraving, and incising.
