Description

DAUNIAN POTTERY JUG WITH A HANDLE

Ca. 400-300 BC
A terracotta jug captures the essence of the Daunian culture through its distinct features. The jug showcases a bulbous body that gracefully tapers towards both the neck and the base, evoking a sense of elegant proportion. The concave and the slightly splayed base provides stability to the vessel, while the arched handle attached to the side offers a practical element for ease of handling and pouring. Completing its form, the jug boasts an everted rim, adding a refined touch to its overall aesthetic. The decorative elements on this jug contribute to its artistic allure. The surface of the vessel is adorned with black painted horizontal lines, carefully executed to create a visually appealing composition. These lines are complemented by repetitive geometric patterns, enhancing the vessel's overall design. These jugs served as practical containers for storing and pouring various liquids, such as water, oil, or fermented beverages. The bulbous body, tapered neck, and everted rim were designed to facilitate smooth pouring and minimize spillage, while the arched handle provided a comfortable grip during usage.
