Description

EGYPTIAN FACE FROM A WOODEN COFFIN LID

26th Dynasty, ca. 664-525 BC
The face lid features a striking yellow-blue striped tripartite wig, symbolizing the wearer's elevated social status or divine connections. This carefully designed wig not only serves as an adornment but also symbolizes the individual's desire for eternal youth and vitality. The intricate details continue around the neck area, where a broad necklace is coloured in ochre, red, and blue hues. This ornate necklace emphasizes the wealth and prestige of the deceased, perhaps signifying their association with a specific deity or their elevated position within society. The facial features are executed with remarkable skill and precision. The outlines of the eyes, ears, and brows are delicately defined using black pigments, creating a sharp contrast against the lighter background. The sclera of the eyes, in particular, is highlighted with a clear white pigment, lending a lifelike quality to the mask. Notably, the nose and lips are crafted with great attention to detail, exhibiting a high level of artistry. The nose showcases a refined and well-proportioned shape, while the lips are carefully delineated, evoking a sense of serenity and peace. These features contribute to the overall realism of the face lid, capturing the essence of the deceased in an aesthetically pleasing manner. As an integral part of an anthropoid coffin, the face lid serves both a practical and symbolic function. Primarily, it provides a protective covering for the mummified body, ensuring its preservation and safeguarding the journey into the afterlife. Additionally, the elaborately crafted features and decorative elements convey the deceased individual's status, identity, and aspirations in the realm of the divine.
