Description

ROMAN BRONZE CHARIOT FITTING WITH SWAN HEAD

Ca. 100-200 AD
A bronze chariot fitting in the form of a tubular shaft, adorned with a delicately domed finial, which would have been a striking addition to any chariot. But this chariot fitting is not just any ordinary decoration. On either side of the shaft, the artist has masterfully sculpted a graceful arm, each terminating in an upturned swan head with intricate detailing that brings the piece to life. The shaft itself is adorned with an elegant raised molding, accentuated by incised grooves that add a subtle yet impactful texture to the piece. Chariot fittings like this one were not just for show but were integral components of a chariot's construction. They served as connectors between the chariot's body and its wheels, ensuring stability and ease of movement during high-speed races or military maneuvers. But beyond their practical function, they were also a symbol of the owner's wealth and status, a way to showcase their opulence and taste for luxury.
