Description

Macedon. Koinon Pseudo-autonomous issue. Time of Gordian III 238-244 AD. Æ (25,5mm, 13,80gr.) Amphipolis mint. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Diademed head of Alexander the Great. R/ ΚΟΙΝΟΝ ΜΑΚΕΔΟΝΩΝ Β ΝΕ King Alexander on Bukephalos galloping right holding spear. Cf. AMNG III 651. VF

From the times of Caracalla (193-217 AD.) and up to Philip the Arab (244-249 AD.), Amphipolis has to show only extremely rare imperial coins. The reason for this is the great number of autonomous coin issues with Alexander, which Caracalla established! Less coins with the inscription ΚΟΙΝΟΎ, were issued in Thessaloniki with the additional inscription ΟMΌΝΟΙΑ and Veroia with the inscription of their city (ΒΕΡΟΙΕΩΝ).
