Phokis for Philip II, Federal Coinage. 351 BC and later. Æ (13,5mm,
2,00gr.). Struck under Phalaikos or later. Head of Athena facing,
slightly left. R/ Φ within wreath.
BCD Lokris 470.8; HGC 4, 1113. VF and very rare.
Desiring to honor Philip II, the Phocaeans issued this type of coin
with only the letter Φ instead of the
classical ΦΩ that was customary! The letter Φ was common for both the
Phocaeans and Philip! Extremely
rare is the same coin type with the inscription ΦΩ on the reverse.
Athena, on these coins though, turns her
head to the right and belongs exclusively to the Phocaeans!
